WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS

It has always been a mission of Socrates Sculpture Park to provide educational programming that is valuable and relevant to our communities today. Every year, our artist-led workshops provide kids and their families the opportunity to not only enjoy creative art-making projects, but also to learn practical skills that they may use in their daily lives. This stimulating art-based curriculum spans subject matters including cultural diversity, science, sustainability and social studies.

SUMMER 2011 DATES:

May 7: Plaster Casting the Fantastic with Lars Fisk
Using clay and plaster, make fantastical, whimsical objects that can be painted, decorated, carved or multiplied. Wowzers!

May 14: Rock, Paper, Scissors with McKendree Key
A Socrates classic! Using recycled and natural materials, learn the basics of papermaking and create beautiful handmade paper.

May 21: Indigo Kids with Travis Boyer
Our indigo guru will teach anyone how to use an indigo dye vat. Bring whatever you wish to dye from wood and plaster to stained shirts and pants - anything! Give your clothing a new life with a great indigo look and witness how all of the hanging dark blue articles make a stunning social sculpture.

May 28: Garden of Objects with Free Style Arts Association
Join in creating a large sculptural installation that takes the form of a huge garden. However, instead of planting vegetables, participants will be "planting" lines of hundreds of objects such as drinking straws, broom handles, colorful plastic tubes, feathers and much more!

June 4: OPA! with McKendree Key
Plate Smashing is a Greek and Danish tradition (among other cultures). Smash a plate and then learn how to use grout to create a unique mosaic using ceramic and metal pieces.

June 11: Customize My Ride with Socrates Sculpture Park artists
Transform your bicycle, tricycle or scooter into a mobile work of art and then flaunt it in the 4th Annual LIC Bike Parade!

June 18: Caught in a Pickle with Linda Ganjian
Come make your own custom-blend sauerkraut! Participants will first sample some pickled delicacies, and then create their own mix by assembling an assortment of vegetables and spices into a jar with salt brine. Later, we will design personalized labels for our jars. Some jars and vegetables will be provided, but participants may bring their own sterilized jars and/or washed vegetables. Instructions will be provided for babysitting the sauerkraut at home till ready to eat.

June 25: Trash to Treasure: Reclaimed Wood with Heather Hart & Build It Green!
NYC Using reclaimed wood and other recycled materials, build simple and useful furnishings for your home - an art/design project for the entire family!

July 2: Wearable Works of Art with Lina Puerta
Make jewelry out of recyclable and natural objects. We'll walk around the Park to collect interesting objects whether natural or not. Participants may also bring recyclables from home, such as plastic shopping bags and bottle caps. Such found pieces will then be turned into wearable works of art - necklaces, pins, bracelets, and more!

July 9: Art Supply Recipes with Anna Craycroft
Mix everyday household ingredients to make art materials that we can use to create paintings and sculptures.

July 16: Blowing Bubbles with Harriet Salmon
Using wire, pipe cleaners and fabric, make a wand of all shapes and sizes then dip it in a soapy mixture to create a sea of bubbles in the sky.

July 23: Miniature Sculpture Park with Jory Rabinowitz
Ever wanted to have your very own sculpture park? NOW YOU CAN! What would your sculpture park have? A whale? Why not! A rocket? Right on! A giant doughnut? DO-IT! Using a variety of materials, participants will create miniature sculptures for their very own take-home sculpture park!

July 30: Site Winding with Carissa Carman
Join us for a collaborative sculptural tent-building workshop using recycled materials to build 3-D spaces.

August 6: Solar Chefs with Carissa Carman
Young chefs help build a solar cooking station and then, mixing simple ingredients together, use the solar power to cook.

August 13: The Dinner Party with Zak Kitnick
Make your Momma proud! Create a new family heirloom! Decorate a plate using your wildest imagination and bring home a dish you will want to wash. You'll want to eat those vegetables just to see your artwork again.

August 20: Odysseus at Hell Gate: An East River Puppetscape with Processional Arts Workshop
See Featured Workshop section.

August 27: Old to the New: The T-shirt Project with Darren Goins
After collecting t-shirts from friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers we'll set out to reuse these once loved t-shirts from the inside out. Using a variety of materials and printmaking processes, scribble your own insignias, glyphs, and phrases onto the insides and wear them outside. Whoopie!

September 3: DIY Bookmaking with Linda Ganjian
Transform an ordinary sheet of paper into a small book by using paper, feathers, glitter, and anything else your heart desires.

September 10: Wooden Beast with Free Style Arts Association
Build a giant wooden creature out of hundreds of long thin pieces of wood. Utilizing tape, staples and screws, participants will actually build a real wooden sculpture in the form of a dynamic, bristling, imaginary beast.

September 17: Sprouted Sculptures with Harriet Salmon
Come make sculpture that grows! Using paper maché filled with real seeds, you can build sculptures that sprout into living creations. By pressing the seed-mush into recycled plastic packaging and other discarded forms, children will build objects that you can put out in the garden or in a flower pot and watch them grow into a creature. Add glitter, paint and other decorations to make the transition even weirder!

September 24: The Wonderful World of Terrariums with Danielle Frazier & Trenton Duerkson
Create your own miniature world of plant life! Bring along your favorite clear container, be it a fish bowl, plastic container, jug, jar, etc. Tiny crystals, rocks, figurines, or marbles also make great additions to any terrarium. We will supply the moss, seeds, some stones, soil and other accents to make these tiny landscapes as mystical as possible. With regular watering, you will be able to enjoy a living miniature habitat on your windowsill, all year long.
