On Saturday, June 6, Socrates Sculpture Park will present the second annual LIC Bike Parade in partnership with Bike New York, City Reliquary and the Civic Riders Bicycle Club, Freestyle Arts Association, Friends of Queensbridge Park, Materials for the Arts, New York City Department of Transportation, Partnerships for Parks, Recycle-A-Bicycle, and Transportation Alternatives (Queens Committee). Back by popular demand, this FREE family and community event will invite children of all ages to explore the creative and functional potential of adaptive reuse, by using recycled materials to repair and decorate their bikes!

The day will kick-off with several hands-on workshops and activities at the Park including bike decorating with Freestyle Arts Association and Socrates Sculpture Park artists; bike safety checks with Recycle-A-Bicycle; and riding safety tips and helmet givaways from the New York City Department of Transportation. Immediately following the workshops, participants will line-up at Socrates' north entrance with City Reliquary and the Civic Riders Bicycle Club, and Free Style Arts Association, and parade their bikes in a colorful procession down Vernon Boulevard (which will be closed to vehicular traffic). The parade will end at Queensbridge Park, where riders will be invited to celebrate the100th birthday of the Queensboro Bridge! NYC DOT Urban Art, Recycle-A-Bicycle, Jacob Riis Neighborhood Settlement, Friends of Queensbridge Park, Greater Astoria Historical Society, Greenshores NYC and TheatreSmarts are partnering to host the Queensbridge Park festivities.

Advance registration is not required, but space is limited. Please arrive early! All workshops are free and supplies will be provided. Participants are required to bring their own bicycles. The workshops will last approximately three hours and will be held - rain or shine - in the education area at Socrates Sculpture Park.

In tandem with the L.I.C. Bike Parade workshops at Socrates, City Reliquary will be leading a free historical bike tour for adults. Participants can learn about the magnificent history of the best bridge to Queens, as well as the development of the most ethnically diverse region in America; understand the unfolding of Queens' various immigrant enclaves; and hear about the cultural and social history of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, which hosted not one but two Worlds Fairs!

Interested riders should meet at the City Reliquary at 370 Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, at 11:45am. They will bike to the East Side Heliport - East 60th Street between 1st Avenue and the East River, arriving at 12:45pm; then casually ride across the Queensboro Bridge and learn its history mid-span; then continue the Queens stories on the way to Socrates, in time to kick-off the L.I.C. Bike Parade at 2PM. Registration with the City Reliquary is preferred but not required. For more information, please visit their website www.cityreliquary.org or call 718. R U CIVIC.
