On Saturday, June 11, Socrates Sculpture Park will present the fourth annual LIC Bike Paradein collaboration with Bike New York, Free Style Arts Association, Friends of Queensbridge Park, Green Shores NYC, Materials for the Arts, Partnerships For Parks, Recycle-A-Bicycle, Transportation Alternatives, NYC Dept. of Transportation - Traffic Safety Division and Velo-City. Back by popular demand, this FREE family and community event will invite children of all ages to explore the creative and functional potential of adaptive reuse, by using recycled materials to repair and decorate their bikes.

In preparation for the parade, children and families are invited to Hallets Cove Playground at the corner of Vernon Boulevard and 30th Avenue, from 11am - 1pm, where they can get free helmets and fittings with the NYC Department of Transportation; receive riding safety tips with Bike New York and have their bikes repaired with Recycle-A-Bicycle. Participants will learn how to properly fit and wear their helmets before receiving them. One must be present in order to receive a helmet. A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign a waiver for children under 18 years old. Adults over 18 years old, must also sign a waiver. Based on availability, the NYC DOT will continue the free helmet fittings and distribution at Socrates Sculpture Park alongside the bike decorating workshops.

For a second year, Recycle-A-Bicycle will also host a Kids' Bike Swap. Children who have outgrown their bicycles or have extra gently-used bikes to donate, are invited to bring their bike to Hallets Cove Playground and swap it in exchange for another gently-used bike. At approximately 12:30 pm, any unclaimed bicycles will be donated on a first-come first serve basis. All children's bikes in working order and without gears are welcome at the event. For more information on the Recycle-A-Bicycle Swap visit www.recycleabicycle.org

The day will continue with several hands-on bike decorating workshops and activities at Socrates Sculpture Park with Velo-City, Free Style Arts Association, and Socrates Sculpture Park artists. Immediately following the workshops, participants will line-up at Socrates' north entrance with Free Style Arts Association and parade their bikes in a colorful procession down Vernon Boulevard (which will be closed to vehicular traffic). The parade will end at Queensbridge Park, where Partnerships for Parks, Friends of Queensbridge Park and Green Shores NYC will lead the festivities from 3-6pm!

Advance registration is not required, but space is limited. Please arrive early! All workshops are free and supplies will be provided. Participants are required to bring their own bicycles.
