In 1990, Socrates Sculpture
Park founded the Education Program, offering a variety of innovative
classes and activities for children. The goal of the Park's Education
Program is to provide an exciting and stimulating curriculum that teaches
practical skills for building confidence and a sense of personal achievement.
The unique setting of Socrates Sculpture Park provides children with
the opportunity to explore their creative talents in an outdoor setting.

Summer
Outdoor Artmaking Workshops
July 5 August 13, 2004
Now in its 14th year of operation, the free Summer Outdoor Artmaking
Workshops offer diverse groups of children from neighborhood youth agencies,
community groups, and summer schools the opportunity to participate in
hands-on activities inspired by the exhibitions at the Park. Taught in
the Park by past and current exhibiting artists, the children learn fundamental
and contemporary art-making techniques. Projects include: sculpture,
drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, performance, and installation.
Two sessions daily: 10:00 am 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm 3:00
pm
Programs are reserved for education and community groups, registration

Socrates Sculpture Park is hosting FREE Sculpture Workshops on Saturdays
from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm on a drop-in basis for children ages 5 and
up and their parents (no class on July 3). The Saturday Sculpture Workshops
feature a different artist-led workshop each week offering participants
the opportunity to explore innovative three-dimensional artmaking techniques
using various materials and objects.
May 22 Parade and Carnival Flags with Elise Ferguson
Participants combine collage, mosaic
and appliqué techniques
to create their own personal parade
or carnival flag.
May 29 Your Animal with Elise Ferguson
Using a variety of colored fabric,
children make a colorful banner
representing their favorite animal
or animal patterns.
June 5 Planetary Matter •Part 1 with
Elizabeth Demaray
Participants are invited to design,
create and form new planetary
systems out of authentic planetary
matter.
June 12 Planetary Matter •Part 2
with Elizabeth Demaray
Using their newly formed planetary
systems, participants build mobiles
dedicated to realizing their perfect
world.
June 19 The Imaginary Sculpture Park with

Children are invited to help construct
a large scale, three-dimensional
imaginary sculpture
park complete with
sculpture, animals, people, and other
interesting creatures.

Children design and construct imaginary
super plant sculptures using
paper,
wire and other 3plantastic2 materials.

Students investigate the obvious and
the hidden in a workshop using
pencil,
pen, paper and paint to create a collaborative scroll of two
worlds, above and below ground.
July 17 Underground - Look Inside
with Lilah Freedland
First students construct a paper-maché globe,
and then using a wide
variety of scrap material and found
objects, participants will create a
secret world inside the globe.
July 24 Mirrored Kites with Jane
Benson
Participants help to fill the
sky with flashes of light by making mirrored
kites. Watch as the sun
catches the mirrored surface of the kite to create
a
daylight / nighttime sky.
July 31 Yemoja, Mother of Fishes
with SolSax
Students will learn about African Yoruba
culture and the story of Yemoja
by creating a plaster relief
sculpture of fish in the sea as the ancestors
of mammals on land.
August 7 Bridge Building! with
Noah Fisher
Young engineers will learn to
construct great bridges of the world
from basic principles. In this workshop,
students build and design
their very own model bridge out of
paper, paint, beads, and many
other fun materials.
August 14 Fantasy Palaces with Noah
Fisher
Young architects will design and create
sketches of a their very own
building. Students will look at pictures
of some of the most incredible
palaces in the world and then fold
the plan up to create their own fantasy
palace!
August 21 Postcards From Someplace Else •Part
1 with
Stephanie Diamond
Using postcards from around the world,
found images, drawings and
travel photographs, participants will
create a new place and journey to
an imaginary or real place. (Participants
are invited to bring their own photos.)
August 28 Postcards from Someplace Else •Part
2 with Stephanie Diamond
Using the postcards created in the
previous workshop, participants are
encouraged to write about a place they
have traveled to, visited or moved
from. The participants write a
message on the postcard and send it to a
person of their choice.

Tai
Chi Classes

For the third year, Socrates hosts free Tai Chi classes conducted in
the Park. Participants will have the chance to relax and exercise among
changing exhibitions of contemporary outdoor sculpture. Classes are designed
for all experience levels. Participants should wear comfortable clothing.

Yoga
Classes
Saturdays, May 22 August 28, 2004

For the second year, Socrates offers free Kripalu yoga, a system of hatha
yoga that integrates body postures, breathing techniques, relaxation
and meditation. Classes are designed especially for Socrates Sculpture
Park. Participants are encouraged to integrate their Yoga practices with
this very special environment. Suitable for all experience levels. Participants
should wear loose clothing and bring a mat or towel.

Tours
Artist-led tours of Socrates focus on the accessibility of contemporary
sculpture while
contextualizing the ideas behind viewing art in an outdoor setting. The
artists conduct the tours through open discussions with the group. Topics
include: the history of the Park, past and present exhibiting artists,
and the current exhibitions, and creating artworks in a public space.

Private Workshops
Conducted in the Park or in schools, these workshops are customized to
meet the needs and interests of groups ranging from special needs to
younger children and young adults. Subject matter includes a basic introduction
to sculpture making, horticultural and environmental issues in art making,
and long-term workshop projects inspired by the changing exhibitions
in the Park.
